Why is it important to consider what is causing misbehavior or a lack of engagement in my students before I react to them?

The American Psychological Association reports that more than two thirds of children have experienced a traumatic event by the age of 16.  Given this statistic, teachers are very likely to have these students in their classroom.  Knowing how to effectively react to their behavior as well as knowing how to address their needs may help them to build resiliency skills that they need to persevere in school.  For more about children and trauma, visit http://www.apa.org/pi/families/resources/children-trauma-update.aspx.
