How does UDL help guarantee students equal opportunities to learn?

A Universally Designed for Learning course is planned with diverse learners in mind.  That is, applying UDL principles to lesson plans, materials preparation, and assessments planning, allows teachers to remove learning barriers for most students from the beginning of the course.  The UDL approach is proactive rather than reactive as a response to student difficulties discovered after the fact.  Such a preemptive approach levels the playing field for students, guarantees equal opportunities to learn, and maximizes their chances for successful learning.
